WHAT IS THE PROPER WAY OF BEING IN CHURCH?
Being in church is less about following a rigid set of rules and more about cultivating reverence, attentiveness, and love for God and neighbor. Still, the Church has long encouraged certain practices that help us enter into the sacred mystery with the right spirit: Reverence for God’s Presence • Remember that the church is the dwelling place of the Blessed Sacrament. Upon entering, it is customary to bless yourself with holy water and genuflect toward the tabernacle, acknowledging Christ truly present (Philippians 2:10). • Maintain a spirit of quiet prayer before Mass begins, allowing yourself and others to prepare interiorly. Modesty and Simplicity in Dress • Dress in a way that honors the sacredness of the liturgy. The goal is not formality for its own sake, but to reflect respect for being in God’s house. Participation in the Liturgy • Join in the prayers, hymns, and responses. The Mass is not a performance to watch but a prayer we offer together as the Body of Christ. • Follow the postures of the congregation—standing, sitting, kneeling—as signs of unity and devotion. Freedom from Distractions • Silence phones and avoid unnecessary conversation. This helps everyone focus on worship rather than on the noise of daily life. Charity Toward Others • Greet others warmly but respectfully. Be mindful of families with children, the elderly, or those who may be praying quietly. • Remember that your presence itself is a witness of faith and encouragement to others. At its heart, the “proper way” of being in church is summed up in Psalm 95:6: “Enter, let us bow down in worship; let us kneel before the LORD who made us.”
