MONTH of the IMMACULATE HEART of MARY
August is traditionally observed by many Catholics as the Month of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. This devotion invites us to contemplate Mary’s interior life—her complete love for God, her maternal love for Jesus, and her compassionate concern for every member of Christ’s Church.
In Scripture, the heart represents the deepest center of the person: the place of love, faith, memory, sorrow, and decision. Mary’s heart is called “immaculate” because, through the singular grace of God, she was preserved from original sin and remained wholly open to His will. Her Immaculate Heart is therefore a heart undivided—a heart that belonged entirely to God.
The Gospel gives us a beautiful glimpse into Mary’s interior life: “Mary kept all these things, reflecting on them in her heart” (Luke 2:19). She did not always understand immediately everything God permitted, but she received it in faith, pondered it in prayer, and trusted in His providence. Her heart teaches us how to remain faithful even when God’s plan is hidden from us.
Mary’s heart was also pierced by sorrow. Simeon foretold that a sword would pierce her soul, and this prophecy reached its fulfillment as she stood beneath the Cross. Yet sorrow did not make her heart bitter. It enlarged her compassion and deepened her union with the sacrifice of her Son. The traditional image of the Immaculate Heart—surrounded by roses, aflame with love, and pierced by a sword—expresses her purity, burning charity, and participation in Christ’s suffering.
Devotion to the Immaculate Heart is always centered upon Jesus. Mary never draws attention away from her Son; she leads us directly to Him. Her words at Cana summarize the spirituality of her heart: “Do whatever he tells you” (John 2:5). To honor Mary’s heart is to ask for a heart like hers—humble, prayerful, obedient, compassionate, and completely receptive to Christ.
August is especially fitting for Marian devotion because the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Assumption on August 15 and the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary on August 22. The Assumption reminds us that Mary’s lifelong “yes” led her, body and soul, into heavenly glory. She is a sign of hope for the pilgrim Church and an image of the destiny God desires for all His faithful children. We can honor the Immaculate Heart during August by praying the Rosary, making an act of consecration to Mary, receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation, attending Mass, practicing the First Saturday devotion, and offering acts of reparation for sins committed against God and human dignity. Above all, we honor her by imitating her virtues and allowing her to lead us into a deeper relationship with Jesus.
During this month, we might pray: “Immaculate Heart of Mary, form our hearts after your own. Teach us to listen to God’s Word, to trust Him in times of uncertainty, to remain close to Jesus in suffering, and to bring His mercy and peace to others. Lead us always to the Sacred Heart of your Son. Amen.”

Mary, Mother of God, your heart is a shrine of holiness in which the demon of sin has never entered. After the Heart of Jesus, never was there a heart more pure and more holy. Your heart is a counterpart of the Heart of Jesus. His Heart is a loving Heart. Your heart is also the most affectionate of hearts after that of Jesus. You love as a mother loves her children. Your eyes ever watch over us; your ears constantly listen to our cries; your hands are always extended over us to help us and impart heavenly gifts; above all, your heart is full of tenderest care for us. The heart of Jesus was a suffering Heart. Your heart was also a suffering heart. Its martyrdom began with Simeon’s prophecy in the Temple and was completed on Calvary. When the hands and feet of Jesus were pierced with nails the sound of each blow of the hammer inflicted a wound in your heart. When his side was opened with a lance, a sword of sorrow also pierced your heart. The Heart of Jesus was a pure Heart. Your heart was also a pure heart, free from the stain of original sin, and from the least stain of actual sin. Your heart is pure and spotless because it was sanctified beyond all other hearts by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, making it worthy to be the dwelling place of the sacred Heart of Jesus. The Heart of Jesus was a generous Heart. Your heart is also a generous heart, full of love, abounding in mercy. All people may find a place there as your children if only they choose to heed your loving appeal. Your heart is a refuge for sinners, for you are the Mother of Mercy, who has never been known to turn away anyone who came to seek your aid. I consecrate myself entirely to your immaculate heart. I give you my very being and my whole life: all that I have, all that I love, all that I am. I desire that all that is in me and around me may belong to you and may share in the benefits of your motherly blessing.
